Scaling Up Sustainable Aviation Fuels: The Path to Greener Skies
The aviation industry stands at a critical juncture. With global travel demand surging, the sector must pivot from fossil-based kerosene to Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) to meet ambitious net-zero targets by 2050. Scaling production is complex, requiring collaboration between governments, airlines, and fuel producers. This guide outlines the essential steps to accelerate this transition.
Step 1: Secure Diverse Feedstock Sources
The foundation of SAF production lies in its raw materials. Unlike traditional jet fuel, SAF can be derived from various sustainable sources, including used cooking oil, agricultural residues, forestry waste, and municipal solid waste. The first step is to establish a reliable supply chain for these low-carbon feedstocks. Partnerships with waste management companies and agricultural cooperatives are vital. Tip: Avoid feedstocks that compete with food crops to prevent indirect land-use change emissions, which can negate the environmental benefits of the fuel.
Step 2: Invest in Scalable Conversion Technologies
Once feedstocks are secured, the next phase involves selecting the right conversion technology.
